THE HERP SHOP CATALOGUE 2020
The bulk purchasing power of the HERP SHOP is particularly important in making hard to obtain items available at very reasonable prices. Many lines carried by the HERP SHOP are not often easily obtained from other outlets and when they are the pricing is often less than competitive. (For more information about the HERP SHOP please click on the History Button to the left.)
The HERP SHOP is run privately by Brian who continue to bring you the excellent service and goods previously only available to VHS members through the HERP SHOP.

|New to the Herp Shop a range of the popular MICROclimate thermostats. Click here to check them out on our Thermostats page.|
Heat Mats produce ultra long wavelength infra red heat. This wavelength is invisible to the human eye and tends to heat furnishings in the cage rather than the air. This action of heating is very similar to the sun and it has the ability to heat anything that it strikes but with the air temperature remaining much lower. Reptiles absorb this at in a manner very similar to basking in a natural environment. Heat mats do get warm but provide very gentle warmth which the animal can sit under or on top of. Used under normal conditions the mats cannot burn the animal.
It should be noted that heat mats give a gentle background heat. If you are keeping animals that requires higher temperatures, then you may require additional supplemental heating. Many diurnal or day active species of lizard require basking spots of rather high localised heat. Additional heat sources should then be provided for these species. Heat mats are excellent primary heaters for most applications requiring night time heating, as they emit no visible light and are the most widely used heater for this purpose.
For many species of snake and for most invertebrate heating. Heat mats are excellent as the sole heat sources. If in doubt please seek expert advice with regard to the animal's specific requirements.

Brian Barnett, the proprietor of the Herp Shop, was recognised in the 2011 Australia Day honors list and has been issued with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM).
This recognises his contribution and pioneering role for herpetoloculture in Australia over the last 50 years.
In this time Brian contributed to the development of antivenins by providing venomous snakes to Eric Worrell, Charlie Tanner and other early venom producers. He was president of the Victorian Herpetological Society for over 3 decades from the 1970's and returned to this role recently and is the current president of the VHS.
Brian's many herpetological papers appeared not only in the VHS journal Monitor, but in a range of peer reviewed herpetological publications and comprised the critical first steps required in the development of captive breeding techniques.
Brian has operated with a deep 'love' of herpetology, contributing in fundamental and significant ways to this field of study.
Brian has fulfilled a mentor role to countless young Australians over the decades. He continues to help both experienced herpers and those new to herpetoculture.
Congratulations Brian Barnett OAM - this honour is greatly deserved!
