Veroncia "Lani" Barnett was born in Babinda, north Queensland and is of Torres Strait Islander - Aboriginal descent. Her grandmother on her father's side was a full blooded aboriginal from Bamaga, Cape York Peninsula. Her mother's heritage was Thursday Islander. Until the age of 20 she lived a more traditional life style in north Queensland before moving south. In 1966 she met and married Brian Barnett, a partnership that continues in the marital sense as well as in the business side through their partnership in the Herp Shop.
Her artistic skills were not displayed in any form during the early years. Following a 1996 visit to her brother, living in Mackay, Queensland they jointly filled in some of the days painting the shed and the tin surrounds of his worm farm with their first attempt at traditional art. Since then she has rarely gone a day without putting in some hours on her new found vocation.
Her works have been displayed numerous times. In 1998 at "Art in Action" in the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. In 1999 at the "Once is Too Often" exhibition, Melbourne. More recently at "Respect for Elders Exhibition" at RMIT Melbourne and Daley Art Gallery at the Trinity Grammar School Center for the arts in Kew, Victoria. At the present time she is a student at RMIT Bundoora, undertaking courses in Koori Art and Design.
The Koori tradtion of Dot Paintings originated with images rendered in the sand. In more recent times this style is created in a more enduring form using more modern materials. The paintings are done on canvas, using acrylic paint and all dot sections are still done using a single twig. Veronica Barnett is a fine exponent of this very traditional art.
Veronica is happy to accept commissions. Displayed here are a number of her works that are currently available. Viewings of her works are happily arranged by appointment only.
